As has been mentioned under remarks on Vrindaa, Jalandhara means one which retains/holds water. In outer world, clouds hold the water which is supposed to be released by thunder and electricity etc. Holding of water is considered a demonical act. In  sprituality, our head or the whole body may be considered as holding of divine waters for the release of which special efforts are required to be made. In mythology, lord Shiva is holding river Ganges' water on his head. The efforts of Bhaageeratha to release this water are well known in mythology. In Hathayoga, there is a posture named Jalandhara Bandha in which the chin is pressed against breast to hold the waters. Nothing is known beyond this. Lakshminaaraayana Samhitaa and Shiva Puraana interestingly mention that Jalandhara was killed by lord Shiva with the weapon of divine wheel Sudarshana which was created out of the toe of the foot of lord Shiva. From yoga point of view, deep mystery is hidden in this statement. In Vipashyanaa yoga, one is supposed to constantly moniter his breath. The breath should penetrate deeper and deeper in the stomach, then it should penetrate the pelvic portion, then into feet and then in foot soles. The puraanic statement seems to indicate that if the breath is able to penetrate into foot toe, and then it transforms itself in the form of a wheel of year, or it is able to connect praana, mind and vaak like earth, moon and sun, then it should be supposed that the waters withheld within the body will be released for attaining higher consciousness as well as for other purposes.
